In the year 1918, Dr. Yosef A.A. Ben-Jochannan, lovingly referred to as Dr. Ben, was born in the historical city of Gondar, Ethiopia. His birth was to parents Krstan ben Jochannan, a professional in law and diplomacy, and Tulia Matta, a Puerto Rican native and a dedicated homemaker and midwife. Both his parents were followers of the Jewish religion. His father was part of the "Falasha," or Beta Israel, while his mother hailed from the lineage of Spanish Sephardic Jews.
