Living in such a diverse community as the United States has prominent societal benefits. However, many of these benefits go unrecognized as a result of stereotypical perceptions of minorities that many people maintain. In her Ted Talk, Jocelyn Pica highlights the numerous stereotypes held against latinos and hispanics in American society, and how these misconceptions can affect the lives and minds of people of this ethnicity greatly. As she explores and clarifies the reality of her culture, she hopes to inspire people to dispose of any stereotypically based mindsets of not just latinos, but all minorities in the United States, which will ultimately transform the country into a more accepting place. Jocelyn Pica is a sophomore and a new member of the Ted Ed club this year. She has had an amazing time working with Dr. B and other members on both her own topic and that of others and looks forward to doing so more in the near future. She is incredibly grateful to be participating in this year’s showcase and hopes that everyone enjoys the various intriguing and informative talks that will be presented today. She would love to thank her mother and father for always motivating her to work hard and do what she loves! This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
