In their own words!
We love Student Success Stories here at USDB and we’d like to introduce you to Kallen who is doing excellent work in his online ASL classes provided by the Utah School for the Deaf.

Kallen lives in Cedar City, Utah a few hours away from the nearest deaf school campus. He attends his local school district and learns from hearing teachers with the help of an ASL interpreter. He also takes some online classes in his native language, ASL through the Utah School for the Deaf.

One of his online teachers, Teresa Kunde, started teaching him English virtually in 8th grade and now he is a sophomore in high school. She was able to identify any gaps in his education and she worked to fill those gaps. “I’ve seen so much improvement. Now, he can achieve direct communications with teachers using sign language.”

Kallen says he loves both going to school in person and his online classes.
Recently Teresa realized she not only caters to their educational needs, but she can also cater to medical needs if they arise. Kallen had to undergo a surgery this winter and he is still recovering and regaining his energy, so she has been able to adjust their class time down to 30 minutes for him. Normally, they meet online every other day for 80 minutes. #WeareUSDB #ASL #deafeducation
