Why we use a HEPA vacuum on water damage jobs. It is not uncommon that when we are processing water damage restoration jobs we find dust and dirt on the floor beneath the carpet and pad. Some of this dust is caused by a breakdown of the carpet backing over time. the carpet backing is partially composed of bentonite clay, which is dirt. This clay ends up on the floor, along with whatever biologic load also found its way through the carpet and pad. Because of the unknown nature of the composition of this residue we have to take reasonable precautions. This means using a HEPA rated vacuum to clean up the dust and dirt. If this was not properly cleaned up then when the air movers are turned on the contaminants will go airborne. Even though we make a great effort to clean as much debris as possible we can not get it all. This is why HEPA rated air scrubbers are used for the duration of the job.
