Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima) is a non-native, very aggressive tree that will negatively impact the native ecosystem. While there is the temptation to just cut it down and maybe treat the stump, doing so will lead to the roots suckering; creating a forest of trees where you had only one. In this video the Woodland Steward will explain how they treat Tree of Heaven so that the tree doesn't produce lots of suckers to replace itself. Learn how to recognize it and tell it from some of its look-alikes, including Black Walnut, Ash, and Hickory. Also learn how the tree protects itself and harms native plant populations by producing a natural herbicide in a process called allelopathy.
