There's a place for us. Somewhere, a place for us. Peace and quiet and open air wait for us... Somewhere. Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim are two of the most influential composers in the world of musical theater, so a song that both of them worked on (Bernstein as composer, Sondheim as lyricist) seemed like a great place to look for interesting and inventive harmonies. Somewhere's musical structure mimics its singer's longing for home, for resolution, for a place to belong. It floats around mysteriously in the verse, and then the bridge... Well, the bridge is still giving me nightmares. But it's an amazing song, and a great look at what you can do with cleverly applied functional harmony.
