For the last few years, it's seemed like the entire world is mired in an endless and ever-worsening crisis on all fronts: a global pandemic, economic uncertainty, climate change, war in Ukraine, growing authoritarianism in the United States, and a rising, aggressively anti-democratic China. Surrounded by all of this, vast swathes of people have fallen into despair, and openly embraced nihilism and apathy. There's an odd sense of security in this hopelessness, and it has made pulling people out of it extraordinarily difficult. However, the world is not as dark as it may seem, and it won't get any better if everyone collectively surrenders to what they perceive as the inevitable. The world is a mess, and no one else is going to clean it up if not us.
