MSD is currently dredging the ash in its south ash lagoon. About 62,000 cubic yards of ash will be removed by early March 2022 and sent to a local landfill. MSD’s lagoons are used to store ash created from the burning of solids at our Mill Creek incinerators. The north lagoon is in operation now while the south lagoon is offline. The ash from the incinerators is turned into a liquid slurry and pumped into either the north or south lagoon. MSD only uses one lagoon at a time, and it takes about three years for a lagoon to fill up with ash. To help cut down on solid waste sent to landfills, MSD is working with the Ohio EPA to obtain a permit to sell the ash for beneficial reuse.
