Similar to many steel towns that faced challenges in sustaining themselves, Gary, Indiana, now stands as a haunting remnant of its once vibrant and prosperous past. In the 1960s, Gary stood as a thriving hub for America's steel industry. However, over the past fifty years, it has transformed into a desolate ghost town.

With a dwindling population and numerous abandoned structures, Gary has earned the unfortunate reputation of being the most miserable city in the United States. Regrettably, it appears that the residents themselves do not dispute this characterization.

In 2024, Gary, Indiana, is home to approximately 55 thousand residents, yet the town faces ongoing challenges in sustaining its situation. Despite nearly five decades passing since the initial job cuts in the 1970s at Gary Works, employment opportunities continue to disappear. Presently, approximately 76 percent of the town's population lives in poverty.

A significant portion of the city remains deserted, grappling with substantial social issues like crime and formation of ghettos. Approximately one-third of the city's properties are believed to be vacant.

Gary has transformed into a virtual ghost town, marked by the closure of schools, shut-down stores, and the abandonment of numerous houses. It holds the second position, following Detroit, in terms of the percentage of population lost in the Rust Belt since the beginning of the century.

Today, the town's crime rate is 56 per one thousand residents, ranking among the highest in America when compared to communities of various sizes, ranging from the smallest towns to the largest cities. The likelihood of experiencing either violent or property crime in Gary is estimated at one in 18 residents.
