How do I know when to stop making Dua for something I want?

This is the question in full received from one of our sisters who follows me:

"Salam Wa3laykom sheikh, I have a bit of a complicated question that nobody seems to be able to answer directly so I am hoping to hear your thoughts. In regards to dua, I understand that you are supposed to have hisn ulthan billah and believe with certainty that Allah ﷻ will respond. Also I understand that you shouldn't be hasty and be consistent and persistent in your dua but, how do you know the difference between a delayed response to your dua or if Allah ﷻ is telling you no, it's not good for you? How do you know when to stop making dua for a certain thing?
