It wasn't until recently that I felt comfortable watching movies and TV shows with an all Asian cast. I knew where my discomfort came from. It made me feel uncomfortable, because sometimes I recognized mannerisms that one of the actors had, that I had. It could be a laugh, a facial expression, or even how they cried. It made me think did I get this from my first mother or first father, or from a grandparent. I also felt sad, because as I watched the dynamics in their family, especially if it was in Korean, I wondered is this how my family would have been, had I not been adopted. It reminded me I am adopted, and it reminded me of the lost relationships that will never be.

From my own personal experiences with watching Asian films and TV shows, I have always wondered if other Asian adoptees, raised by white parents, felt similar. Mei's response happened to be very surprising to me, but it also made me very hopeful. As more and more parents in transracial adoptive families realize the importance of racial mirrors for their child, exposure to their culture, and a deep appreciation of that culture, the better chance their child will grow up with a stronger sense of who they are.

Thank you so much for watching and I hope you'll share with your friends, family and community.
