Joe Jackson Stepping Out was the best song of1982. That’s saying something because 82 was a massive year in music, it was the year of mega chart singles like Eye of the Tiger by Survivor, Physical by Olivia Newton John and I love Rock and Roll by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts and big albums like Men at Work’s Business as Usual Prince 1999, Duran Duran Rio even Michael Jackson Thriller came out at the end of the year… Joe Jackson was just on a higher musical vibrations. He rocked the end of the 70s with his New Wave Hit Is She Really Going Out with Him but then after several albums he got tired of being categorized as New Wave so he wrote a song that called on the ghosts of George Gershwin and Cole Porter and thought it stalled just outside of the top 5 it had a sonic quality that could whisk you away to musical ecstasy. Up next the story of the most unsung hit of the 80s by a man who still has an air of mystery surrounding him.

In the case of this next song, it was a song that came close. It was truly a revelation at the time because it’s mysterious arrangement and lyrical resonance stood out in contrast to all of the other songs in the charts at that time. Once you hear it’s haunting piano melody it will never leave your mind… and it’s a good thing.

I’m talking about Joe Jackson’s top 10 hit Steppin’ out.

Joe Jackson grew up in the working class community of Paulsgrove- an area of Portsmouth, England. He was diagnosed with asthma when he was 3, a condition that he struggled with well into his twenties. His asthmatic condition made sports too difficult for young Joe, so he became a voracious reader, and then turned to music.

As an adolescent, Joe developed a passion for 30s and 40s swing, and classical music. He learned to the play the violin at 11.When he was an early teen, his parents scraped enough money to buy him a used piano. Joe took lessons, and quickly became a very proficient player, so much so, that he began playing in pubs when he was just 16.

Joe’s first band was called Edward Bear- not to be confused with the Canadian band of the same name who had a #3 pop hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in ’72 with a tune titled “Last Song.”In '78, Joe Jackson was signed by A&M Records and promptly formed the Joe Jackson Band that performed as a unit on Joe’s debut album look sharp released in ’79.

The first single from Look Sharp was “Is She Really Going Out With Him” featuring a clever back & forth narrative, with Joe singing in a conversational style- framing a humorous storyline- with lyrics like:"Here comes Jeanie with her new boyfriend They say that looks don’t count for much.If so, there goes your proof.”
