Springtails are wingless insects, thin and elongated, about 1/16 of an inch. They can be found on top of the soil or walking on the edges of the pot, or in the saucer, if the pot has drainage holes. They are generally harmless to plants, as they feed on decaying organic matter and fungi. Some species may damage plants by chewing on the roots and seedling leaves.

They get their name from the ability to jump up to several inches by using a tail-like mechanism under the abdomen. When you disturb them, this "tail" will function as a spring, propelling them away from the danger.

I use diotomaceous earth (DE) to get rid of springtails. I spray it thoroughly on top of the soil and the saucer. DE has to get in contact with the insects. When it does, it absorbs fats and oils from them, basically drying them out. In order for DE to be effective IT HAS TO BE DRY. And THE SOIL HAS TO BE DRY. As soon as DE gets wet, it loses its effectiveness. You might need to apply DE multiple times to completely get rid of springtails. Also, reducing the frequency and amount of watering will help as springtails like moisture.⠀
