This is a Motormouth first look at the all-new Toyota Crown full-size sedan that replaces the Avalon. Say hello to the newest model in the Toyota lineup, the Crown. A historic nameplate last sold in North America in the early 1970s. The Crown has long been the panicle of Toyota excellence in Japan since it was first introduced in 1955. Well, Toyota has replaced the outgoing Avalon full-size Camry based sedan with this crossover based sedan. The Crown sits up higher than a sedan, it’s height is roughly 10cm or almost 4-inches higher than the Camry. It is also roughly 10cm or 4-inches longer than a Camry. With wheel sizes ranging from 19-21-inches, plus body cladding, you can see the roots of the Toyota TNGA-K platform used in other crossovers. All but the top Platinum model get a 2.5L hybrid system, similar to the RAV4 and Lexus NX and Lexus RX models with an eCVT. Horsepower for this model has not been stated but look to the Lexus NX and RX base hybrid models as a guide. All Crown models are AWD but what is exciting is the Platinum model gets the new Hybrid Max system with a turbo 2.4L 4-cylinder and a sold 340 hp with a RWD bias AWD system, using the new 6-speed automatic transmission and what Toyota calls a rear eAxle electric motor. All models get normal, eco and sport modes but the Platinum gets sport +. The hybrid max system will also be used in the new Lexus RX, so it’s obvious that Toyota does look at the Crown as a top model. The platinum is the Crown or the Crown models with standard with adaptive suspension to go along with the better performance an eAxle goodies. The Crown comes with standard power driver’s seat, heated and ventilated front seats are available, plus a mixture of cloth and Softex on the base model, all other models get leather. The top two trims also get the fixed pano roof. Infotainment is covered with a standard 12.3-inch screen with over the air updates, plus all models get wireless ACP and AA. The base model gets a -speaker stereo and the top two trims will get the upgraded JBL system. The Crown comes with Toyota’s safety sense 3.0 including blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert as standard equipment. The Crown comes in three trims, the XLE, Limited and Platinum, the top Platinum trim gets the two-tone loom with a different coloured roof.
Fuel economy is 6.2L/100km or 38MPG for the base hybrid and 8.4L/100km or 28MPG for the top Platinum with the 340hp system.
Pricing has not been announced and the Crown goes on sale this fall
