In an effort to revive names of the past, Mercury opted for the Montego name on their Ford 500-based full-size car. Only running for the 2005-2007 model years, the Montego name was short-lived, and for the 2008 model year, the name was replaced for the more familiar Sable name, to coincide with Ford renaming the 500 to the Taurus.
Production ran from July 2004 to April 2007 at the Chicago Assembly Plant, and sat on the D3 Platform, developed in collaboration with Volvo. Interestingly, the Montego was the first completely new Mercury vehicle since the 1992 model year, and the tallest Mercury vehicle in 50 years.
Montego were available in both front wheel drive, or all wheel drive, with the former equipped with an Aisin 6-Speed automatic, and the latter, a CVT transmission. Only two trims; Luxury and Premier, were available. Despite their lack of popularity and dissapointing sales figures, the 500 and Montego were exceptionally-built automobiles. Utilizing Volvo’s Total Vehicle Geometry manufacturing protocols, engineers, suppliers and assemblers all had comprehensive participation to ensure fit, finish and craftsmanship.
Our Montego was produced on May of 2006.
