Vitamin A - animal versus plant sources with Registered Dietitian, Amanda Li

 Published On Nov 4, 2020

Vitamin A is a fat soluble vitamin that comes in two different forms: preformed vitamin A (from animal foods) and provitamin A carotenoids (plant foods). Preformed vitamin A is more readily absorbed and utilized by your body than plant based sources of provitamin A carotenoids. Your body's ability depends on many factors including genetics, overall health status, and medications. If you are a plant based eater, it is imperative that you get enough carotenoids everyday by eating leafy greens, squash, sweet potato, cantaloupe, and oranges. Oh, and don't forget, vitamin A needs to be eaten in the presence of a bit of fat in order to be absorbed!
