Japan made a run for it when substitute Takuma Asano scored a powerful goal from a right angle to put his team up 2-1. After the goal, there was a moment of silence in the stadium, but fans realised that the ball had gone in. In the first half, Manchester City's Ilkay Gundogan gave Germany the lead with a penalty kick, but in the 75th minut, Japan's substitute Ritsu Doan equalized. This defeat reminded German fans of their early elimination at the previous World Cup.
