After Ozzy Osbourne was fired from Black Sabbath, the band he’d fronted and helped make famous for a decade, a lot of people thought his career was finished. That he was a washed-up has-been. Exiled for being a drunk and a drug addict, and fighting demons and wild mood swings, you can’t really blame them. Even Ozzy thought his career was over. However, with the aid of an up-and-coming guitar hero named Randy Rhoades, he would surprise even himself… rising from the wreckage to become a larger-than-life rock icon. Even bigger than he had been with his former band. And kicking it all off was his seminal 1980 album Blizzard of Oz which delivered a full-speed-ahead, blazing rock track called Crazy Train that had listeners going off the rails… It missed both charts but spawned a classic following, a perfect moment in rock history. Come help us relive it. … NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

So, it’s time for another edition of #1 in Our Hearts. This show honors songs that were so unbelievably great, they absolutely should've been #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. But for whatever reason, be it radio play, lack of marketing, label support, or just sheer stupidity, the song came up short. On previous episodes we have covered Rock N Roll All Nite by Kiss, You Shook Me All Night Long by AC/DC, and Panama by Van Halen.

Today we are climbing aboard the Crazy Train with none other than the madman of metal as our conductor… Ozzy Osbourne and celebrating the brief but electric career of the late great Randy Rhodes. So going back to the summer of 1979, the life of 30-year-old Ozzy Osbourne was on the verge of imitating art. Like the words in the chorus of his yet-to-be-realized epic “Crazy Train,” Ozzy's career was “going off the rails”. He was on a collision course to end his misery-filled existence as another casualty of a reckless rock n’ roll lifestyle… Ousted from Black Sabbath, the band he had fronted for more than a decade, Ozzy seriously believed his career was over. He sequestered himself inside a suite at the Le Parc Hotel in West Hollywood, drowning his sorrows in Scotch, and wallowing in self-pity. Ozzy would only open his hotel room door for liquor runs, and deliveries from his dealer. He wouldn’t even open the drapes to let in the sunlight.

The beacon of hope for Ozzy was a recording deal with British label, Jet Records, but he needed a band to make a record. There was so much debauchery, and darkness during that time, it's hard to shed light on how things really went down… but here it goes….

Everyone that was even remotely involved with Ozzy during that time has a different story. It would be apropos to insert Ozzy’s maniacal cackle here before we continue the saga.
