Tender yet evocative. Lush yet hushed. Trad yet innovative. Sarah Kinsley’s music contains multitudes. Scroll back to the classically-trained thrush’s indie debuts, and you’ll find both the synth-rich “Open Your Eyes” and gently acoustic “Wine Stained Lips.” Not many artists hit the scene with the kind of breadth heard in that 1-2 punch from 2019. With singers, it’s one thing to stretch and dip and intone with proficiency. However Kinsley’s throaty flourishes never overshadow the rest of the music - they only serve to enhance. That’ll happen when you’re a student of Chopin who also majored in music theory at Columbia. “There’s still a classical structure” to her writing, she told us, but it’s balanced out by her yearning for “freedom.” During her undergrad years, this resolute ABBA fan tapped into an ugly side of the industry: only 2% of music producers are women. To break the stigma, she posted TikToks of her building beats cobbled from sounds captured in her dorm. One of them earned more than 1.5 million likes; others were riddled with “please actually drop this” comments. Echoes of her feminist mission are heard in “The King,” - “I wanna be the king… I’m your king” she triumphantly asserts. Self-produced (of course), it’s Kinsley’s biggest streaming song to date as well as the title track to her 2021 EP and the biggest declaration of the 23-year-old’s talent until the ‘Ascension’ EP further leveled her up this year. Gorgeous and rich, all five songs - more like movements, really - seem like they were constructed to fill every nook and cranny. Good thing we have a lot of those on our DSCVR stage. “I feel every emotion that I’ve ever felt when I’m performing,” she explained. “I’m very connected to something bigger than me.”
