The new Tesla Wireless Charging Platform is inspired by Cybertruck’s angular design and metallic styling, providing 15W of fast charging power per device for up to 3 devices simultaneously. It features an aluminum housing, and the charging surface is composed of soft alcantara. It comes with an integrated USB-C cable, a 65W USB-C power adapter, and a detachable magnetic stand that allows you to use the charging pad at an angle for better viewing. It’s engineered with next-generation FreePower wireless charging technology, which charges any Qi-capable device but the main difference is the device can be placed anywhere on the surface without precise alignment. Standard chargers with Qi wireless charging rely on magnetic resonance to transfer energy, which means that the charging pad and device's receiver coil need to be close to each other, usually within a few millimeters, for the transfer of energy to occur. However, FreePower allows freedom of placement. Place your devices anywhere on the charging pad without worrying about it not charging, and charge multiple devices simultaneously with precise power delivery up to 15W per device. The surface activates combinations of 1, 2, or 3 coils based on the location of a device’s receiver, delivering high-efficiency, high-quality charging experiences. FreePower is on a mission to bring this type of wireless charging capability not just to wireless charging pads but to nearly all surfaces that one might encounter in a typical day such as desks, counters, tables, and of course in vehicles. My 2018 Tesla Model 3 does not have any wireless charging, but beginning in 2020 all Model 3 and Model Y vehicles come equipped with wireless charging on the center console for up to two smartphones. Although there's no confirmation of this happening, it is my own educated guess that the next logical step is for Tesla to include the same FreePower wireless charging technology that is in this new Wireless Charging Pad in their vehicles going forward. Having said that, it is more difficult to change and implement new technology like this in vehicles due to the more complex production process, but a bold prediction of mine is that Tesla will add this to their vehicle interiors beginning with the Cybertruck. This type of tech is great for cars because if a phone slides around on the pad it won’t stop the charging or if you’re trying to keep your eyes on the road and decide to quickly place your phone on the charger you don’t have to worry about placing it in a specific spot, thus increasing safety if only slightly, which is enough justification for Tesla because they’ve always said safety is their number one priority. Hopefully someday we’ll see wireless charging for electric vehicles, but no matter if or when that happens, the cool thing is we have amazing technologies like FreePower pushing the boundaries of what wireless charging can be today for all the other devices in our lives.
