South LA has several secrets, but very few like this one.

The Village Green, formerly known at The Baldwin Hills Village, and Thousand Gardens, is a diverse, award-winning planned community in Baldwin Hills, the heart of Black Los Angeles.

Built in 1941, the planned community began as a luxury rental unit that initially broke rental records, and bridged the gap between community and nature in the bustling, car-centric city of Los Angeles. However, more than 80 years after its first rental left the market, The Village Green has found itself--a predominantly white community-- struggling with reconciling the changing colors of Los Angeles’ Baldwin Hills community.

In this extended look at The Village Green, we’ll chronicle the development of the community, and how this community dealt with its diversity pains.
