If you offer discounts to customers, it can be offered for several reasons. When using QuickBooks Online, you can track reductions and early pay discounts in a discount account in the chart of accounts and have them recorded at the moment of sale by creating discount items that go on receipts and invoices. “Early pay discounts” are only given when invoices are paid within a discount period, in order to push customers to pay their bills early. Invoices have “discount terms” listed and all kinds of discounts given are tracked in the profit and loss as “contra income”. So, if you want them in the income section as a reduction, you make them income the account. Some choose to make them expense type of accounts.
