Every great character has an origin story. This story belongs to us.

After making our way through Italy and Slovenia, we find ourselves in Croatia - the place where we got married and the place where William's grandfather (AKA "Dida") was born. It turns out there's a lot more to Croatia than you might think. While the towns along the Adriatic shimmer in the summer sun, there's another world of beauty and history just a few miles inland. If you happen to make your way there in the offseason, the whole country will be waiting for you.

So with a little more than two weeks in Croatia, this trio makes their way down the coast through Rovinj, inland to Lika Province to visit Dida's hometown and Plitvice National Park, before eventually turning back for the coast to explore Šibenik, Primošten and Krka, and eventually making their way to the islands.

“The Sabbatical” is a hobby travel series following the adventures of Steve, Marlene and their baby William, as they take a year away from work to tour the world. The Canadian-German family start The Sabbatical from their home in Switzerland. But with no return ticket, no home to go back to and no solid plans or professions to return to, the trio make the best of the nomadic lifestyle while adjusting to living life on the road and out of a suitcase. The Sabbatical has no sponsors and is not monetized. We’re in it purely for the joy of travel and to document our once-in-a-lifetime experience for family, friends, followers and – most importantly – our future selves.
