I often see these engine with bad timing chains. Sometimes the chains skip enough to cause loss of compression due to the valves coming in contact with the pistons. But sometimes they get lucky and the chains skip time, enough to get the valves out of time to loose compression, but not so far as to bend valves. This engine was 3 links out of time, had no compression but did not bend valves. Inspect the rocker followers and perform a leak down test to be sure. A compression test will always fail if the valves are out of time. This applies for any of the gm 2.4l or 2.2l ecotec engines.
