"The Lake at Evening" is part of Griffes's "Three Tone-Pictures," and it was my 2024 required piece at the Madonna Federation Festival.
Although I likely never would have selected it if not for the Federation program, I grew to enjoy the piece. Griffes epitomized musical impressionism. He set out to craft a song that calls to mind a lake at evening, and damn if he didn't accomplish it.
It's an advanced piece because of the dynamic demands and the tumultuousness at the 1:48 mark (where it sounds less like a lake at evening and more like an evening at Camp Crystal Lake).
Often when I play it, I think of @Finestartist7's painting, "Midnight Moonlight," which she gave me permission to use as a thumbnail image here.
Enjoy.
