Councilmember Huizar joined the City's Department of Cultural Affairs, Public Works, Street Lighting, Street Services, the Department of Transportation and members of the Ex-Braceros to break ground on a $3.2 million streetscape and pedestrian improvement project near El Pueblo, highlighting the City's diverse culture thru design.

The Bracero program brought millions of Mexicans between 1942 and 1964 to America for a work-program between the countries that helped the US in a time of great need.

This statue represents the great sacrifice Mexican immigrants underwent who participated in this the Bracero program, including Councilmember Huizar's father, and all the fathers and grandfathers who endured difficult working and living conditions in our nation’s farms, railyards and mines.

At a time when immigrants are under constant attack, this statue by artist Dan Medina, along with this plaza, is about reclaiming our humanity – for our braceros but also for all Angelenos who have toiled to make a better life for themselves and their families.
