In this All Sports History video we'll look back at what happened to the Seattle Pilots team when they ran into issues with their aging stadium, "Sick's Stadium", and how it eventually forced them into bankruptcy.

After several years of trying to attract a Major League Baseball team to the city, Seattle finally got their team when the Pilots began play in 1969. So what exactly happened that led to the team moving away after only one season? In Today’s video we’ll take a look back at how the Pilots' issues with their aging stadium caused a serious financial strain on the team.

Only lasting one season, some might ask Seattle Pilots became what team exactly and what happened to this club? We'll start by taking a look back Seattle's earliest baseball teams, the Seattle Clamdiggers, Indians, Rainiers and eventually the Pilots. In 1938 businessman Emil Sick bought the Rainiers and helped turn the team into a championship club winning several Pacific Coast League titles throughout the 1940's and 50's. Sick also invested in the team by building a brand new stadium named, "Sick's Stadium" that would ultimately become home to the Seattle's first MLB team the Pilots. Seattle Pilots 1969 expansion would be joined by three other teams, the Montreal Expos, San Diego Padres, and the Kansas City Royals. Originally thought of as a temporary home (while the Pilots would attempt to get a new stadium built,), the team ran into issues with Sicks Stadium Seattle almost immediately durning their debut season in 1969. Problems with Seattle Pilots Sicks stadium's plumbing, poor sight lines, and barely enough seats to fill a major league stadium, cost the Pilots hundreds of thousands of dollars in their first season. Bleeding money, and poor attendance at Seattle Pilots games, the team's owners quickly looked to sell the team but ran into opposition from Washington States two senators who helped pursue legal action to stop the sale of the team. With all other avenues exhausted, the Pilots had no choice but to declare bankruptcy, where a court ruled that the club could be sold to car salesman Bud Selig (who then in turn moved the Pilots to Milwaukee). By the late 1970's, Seattle got a new brand new expansion club and stadium, the Seattle Mariners Kingdome. Seattle Pilots baseball lasted just one season in Seattle before becoming the Milwaukee Brewers, but their legacy lives on to this day, as the Brewers still wear the blue and gold of the original Pilots colors.
