The studio actually submitted an uncut version of the film to see if there was any way that they could get an R rating, but the MPAA informed them that they got an NC-17 rating instead. The MPAA actually recommended that they shouldn’t cut it down due to the idea of losing the impactfulness of the content, and the studio decided to release the movie as unrated so that it would play in more theaters than if it had stuck with the NC-17 rating. Originally, there was going to be a dog that was included heavily in the script, but due to the cost of hiring a trained dog, they cut it out. According to the director, the dog would’ve made more money than anyone else in the film.
