Tamara, a current Pepperdine student set to complete her bachelor's degree this August and begin a master’s program in fall 2023, was removed from her mother’s care at the age of six and, along with her five siblings, and later were placed in foster care. When Tamara received her acceptance letter from Pepperdine, she worried about the cost but was relieved to receive a merit scholarship that covered 50 percent of her tuition, while the other half was covered by grants.

Tamara understands the challenges former foster youth face when considering college and praises the Horizon Scholars Program for providing former foster youth such as herself the resources and support they need as they pursue higher education.
