The way we manage our land, our rivers, estuarine areas and coastal environments all makes a difference in protecting the Great Barrier Reef. Reef Guardian Councils are key partners in addressing the threats to the Reef that lie outside the Marine Park. Through the Reef Guardian Council Program, local governments are taking action to address issues like climate change, poor water quality, coastal development, and promoting sustainable use of the park through education programs on fishing and other direct uses. Each action taken by Reef Guardian Council’s directly contributes to targets set out in the Reef 2050 Long-Term Sustainability Plan.
