This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new 2023 Toyota bZ4X electric SUV from Toyota. This Toyota bZ4x has up to 400 km/250 miles of EV range for FWD models. There are 4 trims in Canada and 2 in the US. The two base trims in Canada are FWD and the two top trims AWD. In the US, the two trims each have FWD and AWD options. bZ4X is the first in a series of electric vehicles Toyota will be bringing it, bZ stands for Beyond Zero. Built on the e-TNGA platform. Toyota plans to expand to around 70 electrified models globally by 2025. This future lineup will feature 15 dedicated BEVs including 7 carrying the Beyond Zero name. There is a new AWD system with Xmode, an available feature for the bz4X and a first for Toyota. According to Toyota you get an exhilarating, yet comfortable driving experience suited for everyday driving and light off-roading. Another feature of the AWD system is Grip-Control with leverages motor drive characteristics to achieve capable off-road performance. The engineer team of the bZ4X also focused on features that maximize energy saving and cruising range particularly in the winter like an available heat pump system for both heating and air-conditioning and a front seat radiant foot and leg heater which is a first for Toyota. Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 has some improvements including, the pre-collision system offers low-light cyclist detection, daytime motorcycle detection and guardrail detection.
Lane recognition is enhanced to add improved functionality while in lane tracing assist mode. The bZ4X has an aerodynamic design with a sleek look that doesn’t look as futuristic as some of the other EVs that have hit the market, it really looks like a Toyota and I see a bit of the Venza in it. The front has a curved bumper, black accents, LED daytime running lights, standard LED headlights and LED taillights, standard 18” wheels, available 20” on the top trim. Top trim with the tech package or Limited trim gets the LED projector style headlights and a black roof. Hands-free Power liftgate with kick sensor and door looks on top trim. There is a 60/40 split rear seat and they fold flat. There is a cargo area under the cargo floor for your charging cables. Multi level floor that shifts down to give you a little more room. bZ4X is 3.7 inches longer than the RAV4, they are about the same width and the RAV4 offers more height. The bZ4X wheelbase is 6.3” longer and because of that the interior space feels roomier in this EV. Cloth seats are standard, softtex on higher trims. One up from base model in Canada you get standard heated front seats and a heated steering wheel 7” multi-information display on top trim, 8” touchscreen is standard and one above the base model you get a 12.3” touchscreen, Standard Wireless Apple Carplay and Android auto with Alexa built in. Available panoramic sunroof that is fixed, it doesn’t open and the top trim gets the 9-speaker JBL sound system. 6-speaker system on the lower trims Above the base model Toyota offers a free trial of 3 years with remote service. It’s an App on your to set your heated seats, heated steering wheel etc. The Top trim has digital keys so you don’t need a key fob, this gives owners the ability to lock, unlock and start the vehicle with a tap of a smartphone. The bZ4X uses navigation that has map information from the cloud to obtain traffic information. There are over the air software updates and its compatible with high output chargers capable of an 80% charge in one hour.
