When someone is arrested or accused of a hit-and-run there are a number of defenses and mitigation strategies that a skilled and experienced criminal defense attorney can use to help get the charges reduced or dismissed.

Two defenses to the crime of hit-and-run are that:

1.) You had an emergency such as driving to the hospital with your pregnant wife

2.) You honestly didn't realize you hit the other car

In cases where those defenses are not a viable strategy to fight the hit-and-run charges, it may be possible to use a mitigation to lessen the charges, or get the charges dismissed completely by:

1.) Arguing that there were no injuries and no property damage

2.) Agreeing to a "civil compromise" where the accused agrees to pay the victim for all their expenses and damages related to the alleged hit-and-run

Those strategies, when employed correctly by a skilled and experienced criminal defense attorney, can help keep a hit-and-run conviction off of your criminal record.
