🌌 Studying the basic designs of a telescope with Mr. Pritesh Ranadive, from HBCSE-TIFR.

This video is part of the Astronomy Concepts Series, developed by HBCSE, TIFR and IAU’s Office of Astronomy for Education (IAU OAE) India Center, for high school and early undergraduate students.

👤 About the Speaker:
Pritesh Ranadive has been part of HBCSE’s Astronomy cell since 2015 and is deeply involved in training of Indian Astronomy Olympiad teams each year. He has M.Sc. and M.Phil. in Astronomy from S.P. Pune University. He has also worked as Senior Research Fellow at IUCAA, Pune. His expertise in observational astronomy and commitment to nurturing young talent are well-recognized. He has accompanied Indian Astronomy Olympiad teams as a mentor in multiple years and was also part of the academic committee when India hosted the IOAA in 2016. His dedication and efforts in these roles have made him a prominent and respected figure in the observational astronomy community.

🎥 About the Video:
This video discussed various telescope designs, focusing on their unique features and advantages. We explore the traditional refracting telescopes, the widely-used reflecting telescopes, and advanced designs like the Cassegrain and Ritchey-Chrétien telescopes. Special attention is given to the optical elements such as parabolic and hyperbolic mirrors, explaining their roles in reducing common optical aberrations like coma and astigmatism. Additionally, the video covers adaptations like the Schmidt-Cassegrain design and the practicalities of using large telescopes with advanced focusing techniques for professional astronomy.
