On 5 July 2023, Watson Farley & Williams and KGAL hosted the 2nd Munich Hydrogen Summit, a half-day hybrid event.

The technologies and investment resources to establish hydrogen as a serious energy alternative in Europe are available and are only waiting for the necessary infrastructure: this was the central finding of the 2nd Munich Hydrogen Summit. Moreover, participants learned about ready-to-operate modular electrolysers that already supply customers with green hydrogen on a decentralised basis and the global planning of large-scale generation plants on land and on water. This is flanked by innovative solutions for safe transport over long distances. Specialised investment funds hold funds to finance projects across the entire value chain.

"The conditions for a hydrogen breakthrough have improved dramatically since our first conference last year. The regulatory framework in the EU, although much more complicated than in the US for example, has also become much clearer. Now it is a matter of creating the framework conditions for production, transport and use on an industrial scale. German industry is particularly concerned about how the domestic transport of hydrogen to the consumer will be ensured," says Dr Christian Bauer.

In general, the lack of investment security was addressed at the summit as an obstacle to a more dynamic development. "There is a high level of interest in the future topic of hydrogen on the financing side," explains Christian Bauer. "However, it is hardly foreseeable at present at what price the product can be sold in three or four years after completion of a project. It is also difficult to conclude long-term purchase agreements with industrial consumers because the connection is often still missing. Another open question is whether a decentralised supply, which is already being realised in numerous projects today, will prevail or rather a centralised model."

The discussants agreed that government incentives and support are needed to minimise existing uncertainties. "The establishment of the EU Bank for Hydrogen marks a milestone in this direction," says Christian Bauer.
