El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz (a.k.a. Malcolm X) was an uncompromising human rights activist, eloquent orator, and a charismatic principled leader who was martyred championing the cause of racial and social justice. He is one of the most widely celebrated and beloved African American Sunni Muslims in America. His life of transformation and legacy of sincere struggle continues to influence and inspire millions of people worldwide, and serves as a vivid example and a sign of the power of Islam to reform and transform our lives by the Grace of Allah!

Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf is a social justice advocate and a former professional basketball player who played in NBA for nine years with the Denver Nuggets, Sacramento Kings and Vancouver Grizzlies. He was one of the league's most accurate free throw shooters. Br. Mahmoud sparked controversy during his NBA career when he refused to stand for the national anthem in a sign of protest and called the flag of the United States a symbol of oppression and racism. He indicated that standing for the anthem would conflict with his Muslim faith because you cannot stand for Allah and also for oppression. In the face of ridicule and character assassination, Br. Mahmoud took a principled and dignified stand for his beliefs. On March 12, 1996, the NBA suspended him for one game, citing a rule that players must line up in a “dignified posture” for the anthem. The players union supported Br. Mahmoud, and he quickly reached a compromise with the league that allowed him to stand and pray with his head down during the anthem. But at the end of the season, the Nuggets traded Br. Mahmoud, who averaged a team-high 19.2 points and 6.8 assists, to the Sacramento Kings. His playing time dropped. He lost his starting spot. After his contract expired in 1998, Br. Mahmoud could not get so much as a tryout with any NBA team. He was just 29 years old. Twenty years later, despite losing prime years of NBA stardom, enduring death threats and having his home burned to the ground, Br. Mahmoud still does not stand for the national anthem and has no regrets about choosing the difficult journey. Below are highlights of a game from Feb 4, 1996 when the Denver Nuggets (led by Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf) broke the Chicago Bulls 18 game winning streak. The game was billed as “Michael Jordan (39 points) vs Mahmoud Abdul Rauf (32 points).” The final score: Denver 105 / Bulls 99.
