March 24th, 2012. Danny "Swift" Garcia takes on Mexican legend Erik Morales aka "El Terrible” in a bid for the vacant WBC Light Welterweight Championship. However, the title was only at stake for Garcia as Morales weighed 142 pounds (2 pounds above the 140 pound weight limit) thus he was stripped of the title and fined USD50,000.

Prefight records; Garcia 22(14)-0, Morales 52(36)-7.

Entering his 60th career bout, the 35 year old Morales who was Quadruple World Champion at Super Bantamweight, Featherweight, Super Featherweight & Light Welterweight held notable victories over the likes of Wayne McCullough, Remigio Daniel Molina, Junior Jones, Daniel Zaragoza, Carlos Hernandez, Marco Antonio Barrera, Jose Luis Bueno, Armando Castro, Hector Acero Sanchez, José Alfaro, Angel Sanchez, Juan Carlos Ramirez, Jesus Chavez, Paulie Ayala, Kevin Kelley, In Jin Chi, Manny Pacquiao & Guty Espadas (2x).

On the other hand, the undefeated 24 year old Garcia had beaten top oppositions such as Kendall Holt & Nate Campbell.

It was a high speed chess match between the 2.8-1 betting underdog Morales and the unbeaten Garcia as they engaged in a tactically competitive affair which ultimately ended in favor of the younger challenger.

In round 3, Morales was shook with a counter right cross.

In round 6, Morales was rocked by a thudding left hook followed by a number of right hands upstairs and downstairs.

In round 10, Morales connected with a powerful overhand right and later in the round he busted Garcia’s nose with a fusillades of lefts and rights.

In round 11, Morales landed a number of hard shots that had Garcia bleeding out of his mouth but as he followed up with another barrage he was floored with a powerful left hook that came out of nowhere.

In round 12, Morales looked finished with little left to offer but his fighting spirit carried him through to the final bell.

After 36 minutes of Light Welterweight action, Garcia became the new WBC Light Welterweight Champion via UD12 with scores of 116-112, 117-110 & 118-109.

Note: The lopsided scorecards were in no way an accurate reflection of what took place as the fight was rather close but the edge went in favor of the Philadelphia born Puerto Rican largely based off the strength of his knockdown.

On October 20th 2012, Danny Garcia took on Erik Morales (who turned 36 the previous month) with his WBA, WBC & The Ring Light Welterweight Titles on the line.
