German Chancellor Olaf Scholz was in China from April 14 to 16 as both countries marked the 10th anniversary of the comprehensive strategic partnership. This visit has instilled a renewed feeling of confidence amidst calls for "decoupling" and "de-risking" from China in the West. What do German businesses have to say about China's future trajectory and how do they plan to tap further into the Chinese market and benefit from its innovation-driven economy? In this edition of The Hub, Wang Guan talks to Maximilian Foerst, President & CEO of ZEISS China. ZEISS is a century-old German manufacturer of optics, industrial measurements and medical devices that has been profiting from the upgrade of the Chinese industry, Foerst says. ZEISS has already fully embraced smart manufacturing, also known as "Industry 4.0," and makes full use of the high-tech and innovation hub in China's Greater Bay Area. Foerst underscores that China provides both the expertise and the solutions that can help foreign businesses innovate and grow on a local and global scale. Foerst also tells Wang Guan that ZEISS is at the forefront of the fight against myopia in China, acknowledging the fact that a change in lifestyle is necessary at a very young age "to keep children away from the screens."
