It's the smelliest day of the year on our small dairy farm. It's the time of the year when Marten's Manurigation comes to empty our manure lagoon and spread that manure onto our crop fields. With fertilizer being so expensive this year, the manure is a stinky, but welcome sight...or rather smell this year. The custom guys utilize a sort of Frankenstein machine with 2 Case IH engines that run the agitator and the pump that pumps the manure through hoses up to the field where a New Holland tractor is waiting to incorporate the manure directly into the soil. The manure is a great way to build up the soil, and Lord willing, help us grow a good corn crop this year. The boys got to see how new technology is helping Marten's be even more efficient with their machines and ensure an even spread of manure over the fields. Another New Holland tractor is in charge of moving the hoses and running the biggest hose reel we've ever seen. Now that the field has some plant food, it's time to start planting corn. A welcome sign of Spring also appeared nearby as we spotted a new fawn waiting for its mother and enjoying the warm sunlight. Marten's make short work of our lagoon and are all packed up and done after just a few hours. Then it's the guessing game of how many total gallons of cattle manure was pumped out.
