Wow Savannah sure has some rough parts!

For this video, I took I-95 south towards the state of Georgia. I wanted to explore some of the worst parts of Savannah, Georgia that I could find. I had spent some time in Savannah in the past, and I knew that there were parts of this city that had high elements of crime and poverty. So I headed away from downtown and explored a pocket that ranks high in crime and blight. It was Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at 10 am.

This particular neighborhood is located on Savannah’s south side, about three miles from downtown. We’ll enter this neighborhood off of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. While Savannah has some pretty rundown areas, this can be considered Savannah’s true hood.

Crime in Savannah is really bad in pockets like this. Overall, Savannah crime numbers have held steady - in the top 30% of all US cities, so it’s not terrible. However, the police department stopped reporting its crime numbers to the FBI within the last couple of years, which is a sign that crime is increasing.

Poverty here is much higher than the national average as well. A lot of Savannah’s poverty today is due to generational poverty. Many of the folks in this part of town have been poor going back more than a hundred years. Workforce development and affordable housing are two options the city of Savannah has been focusing on to pull up the poorest members of its community but you can actually get a foreclosure in this part of town for about $25,000. Other homes cost anywhere from $75k to $120k along this stretch, which is actually really affordable.

Here’s a look at the rest of the worst part of Savannah Georgia.

So for perspective, I wanted to show you how hit and miss Savannah neighborhoods are. Just a half mile from the neighborhood that we just looked at is another neighborhood that looks COMPLETELY different. Check this out. Only a half mile away from where we just visited in the bad area. That’s Savannah for you - rundown homes on one block and super nice well kept areas one block away.
