The family of 16-year-old Jahaz Phillips said Monday the community lost a "soul you only come across once in a lifetime."
The family described him as a Nathan Hale student who connected with teachers and counselors and had a knack for making people feel better with his smile. He had what several family members, a teacher, and a family friend said was a way of making people smile and feel good.
"That handsome smile that brightens up the whole room," said Alisha Quinones. “He gave that smile, and it just touched everybody."
