MY INTENDED USE:
A smart door lock adds wonderful convenience of to every day life and its use is not limited to rentals (airB&B, VRBO etc). This lock works on bluetooth and also wifi. I installed this Schlage smart door lock deadbolt on the front door of my house just before summer to make it easy for my family/kids to be out and about during the summer and not worry about a physical key.

CAN I REMOTE UNLOCK / LOCK WHILE AWAY FROM HOME?
Yes, absolutely. I can be hundreds of miles away from home and unlock the front door by pressing a button on the Schlage App. All I need is WiFi at home and internet (data or WiFi) on my phone for Schlage App to connect to internet so I can (control) operate this Schlage lock remotely from thousands of miles away.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN POWER GOES OUT / NO INTERNET?
This smart lock is a Bluetooth lock and a wifi lock all combined in one. It works on whichever connectivity option is available. Lock has its own battery therefore the stored codes work well without issues.

When power goes out or I have no internet connectivity, I can still unlock / lock this lock from INSIDE my home because my phone connects to lock through Bluetooth. But if I am away from home and have no internet and no bluetooth connection to lock then I cannot control the lock remotely, which means I cannot unlock the lock remotely. But I can always give a stored code to someone to go to my home and punch in that code to the lock and unlock the door.

BATTERY LIFE and BATTERY TYPE:
Schlage 489WB lock battery life is very good. This deadbolt lock came with four Duracell AA-size Alkaline batteries that lasted more than six months of daily use. After six moths the battery went down to 25% and the lock would flash red battery sign when using it, and Schlage App also showed battery in red color! I changed out the battery on front door deadbolt with regular AA-size Alkaline battery (AC Delco brand) I had bought in bulk and the lock is working fine.

VERDICT?
Absolutely love the functionality of a smart lock and would highly recommend it. I am so impressed with this locak that I bought another smart lock from Schlage for my garage door - Encode Smart WiFi Lever lock (Encode 789WB lever lock) This is smart lock with a lever to open the door! AWESOME!
