Tires are the topic. I’m Steve DuVal from Thor Motor Coach, before you hit the road, you need to make sure your tires are ready to roll. So we’ve enlisted the expertise of Dr. Tread to give us the ins and outs.
In order to check the tires you need this. This gauges reads up to 160 psi, which means what Dr Tread?
Pounds per square inch.
Have you ever taken a close look at a tire? The sidewall is chock full of information. Here you can find the load rating, inflation pressure, speed rating, size, even when and where the tire was made. Some of that information can also be found inside the coach, on this particular coach, it’s on the door. It’s important to check your tires when they’re cold, right Dr. Tread?
Yes, gas expands when heated heat causes the molecules to move faster, (heat energy is converted to kinetic energy) which means that the volume of a gas increases more than the volume of a solid or liquid. However, gases that are contained in a fixed volume cannot expand - and so increases in temperature result in increases in pressure.
Checking the pressure easy peasy. Remove the cap, put the gauge on and here’s your readout, remember, maximum tire pressure and recommended tire pressure are not the same… you want to go with ideal. On rear dual wheels you need to locate and check the inner tire too. If you need air, put some in, but do not over inflate it. If you need to let some out you can, just never let air out of a hot tire as you could under inflate it. So what happens if you over or under inflate your tires?
Improper inflation could lead to all kinds of chaos!
I don’t think you can say that Dr Tread. Under inflated tires will build up excessive heat. Over inflation can reducing traction, braking, handling and cause uneven tire wear. You should check the air pressure every two weeks or at least once a month and before any major trip. Your motorhome’s air pressure should be checked every morning on long trips. Check your tires when they are “cold” a cold tire is one that has not been driven on for at least three hours, not cold because it’s chilly outside. It’s important to check the pressure after you’re all loaded and before you hit the road.
That’s right, the benefits of properly inflated tires: improve handling, fuel economy, increase the life of tires and it’s a safety issue. Air pressure supports the entire RV so proper inflation is important. Air pressure and load limit go hand in hand, and you never want to exceed that number. Overloading makes the vehicle hard to drive, can cause damage to your motorhome and it’s also a safety issue.
