This footage of a Great White Shark near a swimmer was captured on August 16th, 2020. While doing a routine shark monitoring drone flight, I came across a man swimming behind the breakers. The man is clearly surprised at first glance and reacts accordingly, by not panicking and keeping eye contact. However, some of the following behavior is questionable. I'm including a few tips along with the footage to provide some information about what to do and what not to do if you encounter a shark while swimming.

Juvenile Great White Sharks are drawn close to certain areas of the California coast due to the abundance of sting rays and the safety and warmth of shallow water. On this particular flight I counted nearly 50 sting rays along a 1 mile stretch of beach, hence the presence of sharks. Signs have since been posted along the beach advising folks that sharks have been seen in the area. Remember, be aware, be smart, give them space, definitely don't pursue them, and always respect their home.
