The all-new Volkswagen ID.7 has finally arrived, and it's shaping up to be the sensible, mainstream electric luxury sedan consumers have been craving. While it may not be the most exciting EV on the road, the ID.7 absolutely nails the basics with a spacious interior, long range, and comfortable driving dynamics.

From the outside, the ID.7 cuts a sleek, aerodynamic profile thanks to a low nose, sloping roofline, and full-width light bar at the rear. It's restrained styling for sure, but some might find the minivan-like silhouette a bit too bland. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as they say.

Step inside, however, and the ID.7 delights with a spacious, upscale cabin and VW's latest infotainment tech. The centerpiece is the massive 15.0-inch touchscreen sitting proud atop the dash, now mercifully updated with better responsiveness and illuminated touch sliders. An augmented reality head-up display keeps vital info in the driver's line of sight.

While certainly not a performance machine, the ID.7 handles admirably and delivers smooth, quiet operation befitting its luxury pretenses. The rear-mounted electric motor makes 282 horsepower, enough for drama-free merging and passing. Ride quality is plush yet composed, soaking up road imperfections without feeling floaty or disconnected.

The 77 kWh battery provides a very respectable 384 miles of range according to VW. Upgrading to the larger 86 kWh pack boosts that number to 435 miles, making the ID.7 an ultra-efficient long-distance tourer. Just don't expect Tesla-beating acceleration or handling thrills.

Priced from $51,495 in the US, the ID.7 undercuts rivals like the BMW i4 and Polestar 2. You can pay more for extra performance and appeal, but the VW makes a compelling case for mainstream EV buyers simply wanting a refined, comfortable commuter with room for the family. It's an electric car for the masses, just as Volkswagen envisioned.
