While in our travels we found what looked to be a beautiful yet sadly overgrown and almost forgotten cemetery.
I did some research and found it was land donated around 1867 for burial grounds for Poor immigrant families or even immigrants with out family. Also I am sure there was some local families that also chose that for their final resting place of loved ones.
In the late 18 and early 1900s, the industrial boom was on, families came from all over the world to start a new life and a lot of them settled in and around Philadelphia area.
There was the now famous steel mill Industry that encompassed the area as well as multiple machine shops, textile factories and anything else of the time.
I read stories of rudimentary Burials, overnight burials, and basically just some migshift burials because people had no other choice.
It was sad to see but made a lot more sense once I read up on the history.
There is a large group of volunteers. I believe it was called Friends of saint Michaels on Facebook. Its a big group of folks with big hearts that Realize these are the people that helped build this beautiful country we live in today.
we may never know the people in here or how many are here, but deserve remembrance and recognization.
These local volunteers have done so much work up there. Thank you and God Bless your efforts
Get out and DISCOVER YOUR WORLD, there is beautiful hidden history all around us.
