We know that for many, brake fluid is often a “one and done” scenario when building a car. That could not be further from the truth, as a brake fluid change should be considered at certain intervals based on brake system usage, environment, and more. Furthermore, when it comes time to replace brake fluid many enthusiasts are confused about DOT 3 vs DOT 4 brake fluid, and which one should be used when performing a brake fluid flush.

To help clear the air on brake fluid types and if you should use brake fluid DOT 3 or DOT4, or even DOT 5.1, we held a brief technical chat with Mike Hamrick from Wilwood Disc Brakes. We discuss when to replace brake fluid, the importance of a brake fluid flush, and more. Brake fluid does not last forever, and much like changing your engine oil, or flushing your engine coolant, a brake fluid flush with brake fluid change to the proper brake fluid type will not only protect your brake system but may very well provide better stopping due to higher fluid temperature abilities.
