In the north of The Netherlands there's a special part of nature. The Wadden Sea (Waddenzee in Dutch) is part of the UNESCO World Heritage. There's a bunch of animal species, from fish and crabs to seals and even whales!

However, the biodiversity in the region has been declining for over 2000 years. Due to overexploitation, trawling and dredging the bottom is becoming more and more soft and flat.

Jon Dickson, who is a researcher at the NIOZ, did an experiment where he used pear trees to create artificial reefs. The goal of his experiment was to test wether or not pear trees could bring back biodiversity in the region. The results spoke for themselves, life started blooming around the artificial reefs!

Now the question remains if this small scale experiment can be replicated on a bigger scale.
