Lead guide aboard M/V Evolution, Rafael Pesantes, spotted the Orca pod going after the sea turtle on May 29, 2016 in the Galapagos and quickly set off with the passengers to follow the developing scene.

It’s extremely rare to see an Orca tossing a sea turtle in the air. This video was taken by Phil Courter in the Bolivar Channel in the Galapagos Islands off the coast of Fernandina Island. You can see La Cumbre volcano in the background on Fernandina. Though transient Orca pods are not uncommon in the Galapagos, they are only seen very infrequently by visitors. Transients are opportunistic predators and feed on species including sea lions, dolphins, fish and in this case, green sea turtles.
