Pinocchio is the last Disney classic to get the hybrid live action update though it still leans heavily on computer animation. Just not as much as The Lion King’s update did. For Pinocchio Disney stalwart and poster boy for kindness Tom Hanks takes on the live action role of Gepeto who makes the wish upon a star that brings his marionette to life thanks to the Blue Fairy. What do the other color fairies do? Don’t worry about it. While Pinocchio in 1940 was only Disney’s third at bat, in 2022 Disney has become a cultural juggernaut with hours and hours of iconic material that makes up the world we live in. With all of that history, it’s nearly impossible to not reach back into their past and make a few nods to what Disney has become between 1940 and now. The wall of coo coo clocks alone contains a treasure trove of Disney references as well as nods to the star and the director Robert Zemeckis who himself is a bit of an icon shepherding movies like Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Forrest Gump, and Castaway. All of the key adventures of the marionette with no strings are there from Honest John and Gideon to the Coachman and the monstrous Monstro. There are even a few new friends and an extra layer of sadness to add depth to the proceedings. Aside from the wall of coo coo clocks where else did the production hide nods to the movies that came before them or provided a little bit of commentary on Disney itself and the efforts to convert their classic animated faire into live action movies.
