JFK Airport, New York, January 25, 1990. It is 8:00 p.m., it is dark, the weather is bad, the sky is congested. The 707 of the Colombian company Avianca, with 158 passengers on board, begins its descent.

Approach control directs him to a first holding point, then a second, then a third. The device has been running in circles for over an hour and a half. It becomes urgent to land because the fuel level is very low. Finally, the control tower gives permission to land. But the 707 is not alone. Three planes are in front of him, on the same runway. One after the other, the four engines gave up the ghost: the plane went into free fall and then crashed north of Long Island. Rescuers managed to extract more than 80 survivors from the debris.
